SolarEdge Power Control Systems (PCS) Busbar Current Management Available in U.S., Removing Installation Barriers for Larger PV Systems

Milpitas, California, August 8, 2024 –  SolarEdge Technologies, a global leader in smart energy solutions, announces that its Power Control System (PCS) technology is now available. The solution is designed to enable the installation of PV systems that are more than four times larger without requiring costly and time-consuming main panel upgrades (MPU). This means that with new PCS technology, the SolarEdge inverters can now monitor, balance, and control the currents on the main panel busbar, resulting in the ability to install larger PV systems than allowed today by the National Electrical Code 120% rule.

David Gomez, of Clean Energy Solutions, CA, remarked on his experience with SolarEdge's PCS, "We run into a lot of smaller main panels in our market. With this solution, being able to install larger systems that can provide our customers the energy they need on those smaller main panels, without having to upgrade the main panel, is a game changer for us and for our homeowners."

With this new version of PCS, a typical home with a 200 Amp main panel could install up to nearly four times larger systems of 30kW of solar AC or up to 15kW AC on a 100 Amp main without requiring a main panel upgrade. Today, installers can unlock this feature with an upgrade kit, and PCS technology will be pre-embedded in the new versions of SolarEdge’s market-leading Home Hub inverters later this year. The new inverters will require only the current transformers (CTs) to be installed on the main panel, with no additional external connector boxes, further simplifying installation and commissioning processes relative to other solutions. Other improvements in the inverter include software innovations for faster commissioning, and automotive-grade critical components for enhanced inverter reliability.

The SolarEdge DC-coupled architecture enables up to 200% DC oversizing and storage of excess PV in the SolarEdge Home DC-coupled battery.
“Due to increased demand for electricity and rising utility prices, homeowners are looking for more powerful solar PV.  This latest innovation allows installers across the country to offer their customers more powerful solar with significantly improved installation processes, PV and battery storage economics.  It expands access to affordable, larger solar PV systems to more customers – including those with older homes,” says Bertrand Vandewiele, General Manager of SolarEdge in North America. “We will continue to lead the charge in renewable energy innovation, delivering solutions that empower customers and accelerate the transition to a sustainable energy future.”
