SolarEdge Reports Unprecedented Growth in Residential Storage Demand in Germany

Leading German PV installers cite more favorable economics and increased concerns around energy security as the main drivers for homeowners shifting towards self-consumption and grid independence

July 17, 2023 – Global leader in smart energy technology, SolarEdge, is witnessing unprecedented growth in demand for battery storage in the German residential market. In Germany, approximately 70% of SolarEdge residential PV sites installed during Q1/2023 included a battery – representing SolarEdge’s highest battery attach rate in Europe. This comes on the back of a 45% increase in battery installations connected to SolarEdge residential PV sites in Q1/2023 (from Q4/2022), on top of a record 100% increase in the previous quarter.

According to SolarEdge and leading PV installers in Germany, the surging demand for residential battery storage underscores a rapidly growing trend towards self-consumption and increased grid independence in Germany.
Alfred Karlstetter, General Manager of SolarEdge Europe, comments: “The trend towards self-consumption and greater energy independence is accelerating across Europe, with energy bills high and homeowners increasingly aware of energy security. Germany is at the forefront of this shift, demonstrating the highest battery attach rate in Europe. With a robust battery and backup inverter supply chain in place, we’re well positioned to meet the rapidly growing demand for residential storage in Germany.

In recent years, SolarEdge has built up its production capacity across the globe from South Korea to Hungary to Mexico, among others. To meet the fast-growing demand for PV and storage in Germany, capacities of key residential products such as the SolarEdge Home Hub inverter, SolarEdge Home Battery and SolarEdge Home Backup Interface are now available for order.

Sascha Raible, Managing Director of leading German installer, Raible Solar GmbH, adds: “The demand for home batteries in addition to PV has been incredible. More and more homeowners are now looking to take control of their energy bills by moving to self-consumption in order to be less dependent on electricity suppliers. As an installer, ensuring our customers get the highest power yield and have reliable back-up is paramount, which is why DC-coupled battery solutions are proving to be very popular.”

The DC-coupled SolarEdge Home Battery has an industry leading round-trip efficiency of 94.5%, when attached to the SolarEdge Home Hub Inverter. The DC-Coupled battery architecture eliminates the ‘triple-conversion penalty’, with two less AC-to-DC power conversions compared to AC-coupled alternatives, delivering industry-leading round-trip efficiency and higher PV oversizing. With this added power, homeowners can charge their EVs and other heavy-load appliances such as heat pumps.

In Germany, approximately 70% of SolarEdge residential PV sites installed during Q1/2023 included a battery – representing SolarEdge’s highest battery attach rate in Europe.
